TRAINING

Let River Town Retrievers Build the Retriever of Your Dreams!

At River Town Retrievers, our goal is simple: to develop some of the finest retrievers in the country. We achieve this by delivering top-tier training, challenging each dog to reach its full potential, and maintaining the highest standards in everything we do. Our proven training methods, attention to detail, experienced team, and exceptional training grounds all contribute to consistent, reliable results.

We understand that a dog’s performance improves with diverse, real-world experience. That’s why dogs in our programs are exposed to a wide range of environments throughout their training. They practice key skills across different locations, terrains, and weather conditions, and they work around various dogs and people to build confidence and adaptability. Once a skill is established, each dog is also handled by multiple trainers so they learn to perform for anyone—not just their primary handler.

This comprehensive approach ensures that when your dog heads to the field with you, they’re prepared, confident, and ready to succeed.

Basics

Our Basic Retriever Training Program covers the essential skills every working retriever needs. Dogs learn on- and off-leash obedience, whistle commands, collar conditioning, force fetch (hold, fetch, and release), and foundational marking concepts on both land and water. Throughout the program, your dog will also be introduced to gunfire, decoys, live birds, dog blinds and stands, and a variety of realistic hunting environments.

Upon completing the program, your dog will respond reliably to verbal and whistle commands, remain reasonably steady to shot, retrieve single marks on land and water out to 100 yards or more, and deliver birds cleanly to hand.

By the end of Basics, your dog will be well-prepared for standard hunting situations. For those interested in competition, your dog should also be ready to successfully participate in HRC Started or AKC Junior-level hunt tests.

If you decide to continue into more advanced training, the foundation established in this program will fully support your dog’s progression.

Because the strength of a dog’s foundation is critical to long-term success, the Basic Program typically requires approximately six months to complete.

Advanced

Advanced training begins with transition work. During this phase, your dog will learn a wide range of new skills while strengthening the foundation built during basic training. Dogs in transition are taught three-handed casting, remote sit, and force-to-pile work. A series of structured, increasingly complex drills develops the ability to run blind retrieves on both land and water. Your dog will also be introduced to more challenging marking scenarios, as well as the concepts of honoring, walk-ups, and various types of diversions—including diversion birds, auditory distractions, and scent distractions.

After transition, your dog will progress into fully refined handling. This includes literal casting, maintaining straight lines, running land and water triples and quads, and learning how to “fight the factors” such as wind, cover, terrain, and water influences. Your dog will develop advanced marking and blind retrieve skills, with an emphasis on precision, confidence, and consistency across increasingly difficult setups. Field scenarios will incorporate elements like poison birds, blinds under the arc, inline marks, and other advanced concepts common in upper-level hunt tests and field trials.

The time required for this program depends on your goals. For example, some owners simply want their dog to run clean, reliable blinds, while others aim for competitive achievements such as a QA2 title. At minimum, you should expect approximately four months to complete the transition phase.

Owner Training

It’s important to remember that every dog matures and learns at its own pace. Training timelines can vary depending on your dog’s natural instincts, drive, and individual ability.

We strongly encourage owners to participate in training sessions throughout their dog’s program. Regular involvement allows you to see your dog’s progress firsthand, while giving us the opportunity to teach you how to properly handle and manage your dog. Our goal is to ensure that each owner can confidently work with their dog, reinforcing the training at home and maintaining consistent obedience after the dog returns.

These owner-training sessions are a critical part of transitioning your dog from working with a trainer to responding reliably to you. They also provide the perfect opportunity to ask questions about behavior, progress, and anything else you’d like to understand during the process.

Prescheduled owner training sessions are included with all of our programs.

Retriever training grounds

River Town Retrievers is fortunate to own and access an exceptional range of training grounds suited for every stage of your retriever’s development. We work across more than 6,000 acres of diverse terrain, including flatlands, rolling hills, steep slopes, swamps, sloughs, pastures, orchards, and numerous ponds of varying shapes, depths, and technical features.

Among these resources are two dedicated technical water training areas. These tech ponds feature multiple points, peninsulas, channels, and levees that create complex water patterns designed to challenge dogs and strengthen their skills. Whether we’re introducing a young dog to water, teaching a dog not to cheat, or building confidence on long, memory-style marks, these water features give us the precise environments needed to teach effectively.

Our expansive grounds allow us to train on land and water year-round. Their variety enables us to recreate countless realistic hunting and testing scenarios—helping us produce confident, consistent, and well-rounded retrievers.
